Masca is a fantasy-romance that follows the life and choices of a young mage named Asarella. All she desires is to work hard and become a skilled mage, but her life takes an unexpected turn when she enters the Demon Lord's castle. The story begins lightheartedly, filled with jokes and absurd situations, but it quickly becomes more serious. A convoluted love triangle only adds to Asarella's numerous predicaments.
The manhwa started off with promise. After the first volume, many races and characters were introduced, and I was eager to explore this diverse world. However, by the end, all the potential fizzled out. The political aspects were poorly executed, involving mages over a thousand years old, and these elements were never resolved. Only the fate of one small country, Eda, was addressed, while the rest of the world remained unmentioned. Average humans weren't even given a mention. The world-building was severely lacking.
The art was decent but suffered from a lack of distinction; everyone looked similar. The Demon Lords were the only ones with somewhat unique features.
The characters were frustrating, though their motivations were somewhat understandable. While not entirely one-dimensional, they failed to evoke any emotional connection. Asarella was probably the most irritating. At 20 years old, she acted like a 13-year-old, which was perhaps unsurprising given how young she was compared to others who had lived for centuries. One of her love interests, Arch Mage Elihue, was literally her adoptive father, and his character and intentions were the most perplexing to me.
I was deeply disappointed. The romance was poorly executed, an exciting world was left largely unexplored, the story dragged on unnecessarily, and the ending was unsatisfying. I felt as though I had wasted my time and effort.
Would not recommend.
Let me explain why I hate her. First off, she's charming, and I won't deny that. However, early on, she knows that both the Demon King Cainen and her mentor Eluhie are in love with her. So, she's not naive; she's more foolish. It's established early that she's in love with her mentor. Now, I personally love Cainen. I would understand if she had kindly turned him down because you can't be with someone you don't love. But she doesn't do that. While it's clear she loves Eluhie, she plays with Cainen's feelings in the worst way possible. Every time Eluhie is in trouble, she cries out to Cainen. It's like stabbing him a thousand times. She goes back and forth between the two men while Cainen patiently loves her. Because he uses so much power to help her, he eventually goes crazy, causing him immense pain. I just don't understand her. There are two men who love her deeply, yet she toys with their emotions.
Aside from that, the other characters are fantastic, especially Cainen, the Demon King. Trust me, you'll fall in love with him, and then you'll end up crying your eyes out. So, it's a great story, but it's also heartbreaking.
The story follows a novice magician girl who defies her mentor's advice and ventures into the demon lord's castle to rescue individuals purportedly abducted by him. Her impulsive and reckless actions inevitably land her in trouble, leading her to form a pact with the demon and reside in his castle.
Her stay in the demon's domain is short-lived, merely serving as the prelude to her broader adventures. The narrative deepens and becomes more intricate in subsequent chapters, taking readers through various realms—the world of immortals, magicians, and even the dead.
Asarella, the protagonist, is a spirited yet naive girl whose audacity verges on the preposterous. Remarkably, this trait is meant to be her charm. Before long, she becomes the object of affection for every male character, rather than their ire. Despite occasional irritability due to her tendency to act without thinking, she isn't entirely unlikable and can be intriguing at times.
Fortunately, the other characters exhibit more common sense compared to her. Most are brooding and enigmatic, except for Asarella’s master, who is gentle and composed—though later revelations suggest he's not as mild-mannered as he appears. Asarella's contrasting personality against these characters creates much of the tension. The demon lord fits the classic mold: feared and perceived as evil, yet ultimately more complex than expected.
I thoroughly enjoyed this tale. However, I felt it could have been slightly shorter, as certain conflicts feel repetitive. Still, the presence of numerous bishounen might distract fangirls from its flaws. While its comedic elements don't always elicit laughter, it effectively entertains through its captivating story and endearing romance.
